"Not to be daunted by the most gigantic word in the dictionary"

Welcome to my Capstone portfolio.

This site is designed to showcase me, Pinn Crawford, as a librarian. Included is a sampling of what I have studied and learned during my two-year journey through Emporia State University's SLIM program. I hope to provide insight into my background, experience
and my approach to librarianship.

Access and Advocacy

I have tailored my degree with the goal of providing exceptional
reference services in a public setting.

This reflects my belief that there should be as few barriers as possible to the access of information. My work in the field to date has incorporated many approaches, both theoretical and practical, to disseminate and diffuse information to patrons.

Access to material must be available to patrons of all kinds, and librarians should pay particular attention to those who may be ignored or discriminated against. I see advocacy, at least in the form of actively identifying these populations and assessing their needs, as fundamental to a librarian's work.

Finally, I have a strong commitment to the principle of free speech and freedom of expression. The American Library Association, in articles III and IV of its Library Bill of Rights,  mirrors my feelings on the matter:

III. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.

IV. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.
